Describes Dr. Almon's application of blood-stone to treat bleeding that was, the doctor claimed, staunched not by the stone but delayed effects of styptics earlier administered. From a letter by Rev. Dr. Mather Byles, Series A 1993 35D.
16th Dr.
Allmon the System-Monger came in great Distress to borrow
my Blood-Stone for a Man who, notwithstanding all his scien-
-tific Efforts, was absolutely bleeding to Death. The Man put
on the Blood-Stone, & the Bleeding stopped: but the Doctor
is of Opinion that this was owing to the violent Stiptics which
he had been taking for several Days before, & which exactly
at that Instant began to operate.
