Recommendations for an eye remedy included in a letter from Rebecca Byles Almon (1762-1853) of Halifax to Mrs. Byles, Boston, dated 10 Oct 1789. Series A 1993 35 D. Rebecca Byles Almon was the wife of Dr. William James Almon  and daughter of Loyalist clergyman Rev. Dr. Mather Byles. Her father was the son of Boston clergyman Mather Byles and great nephew of Cotton Mather, the Puritan pamphleteer who played a key role in the Salem Witch Trials. Rebecca Byles married Dr. Almon of Halifax in 1785, a union that produced six children. Her 1810 portrait by Robert Field was acquired by the National Gallery of Canada in 2008.

[...] give my Duty to my Aunt Polly
tell her I have consulted the Doctor about her Eyes, & he thinks
that about [10?] grains of white vitriol dissolved in eight spoonful
of clear Water, and to wash her eyes with it occassionaly would
be of great service to her. Mr. Mrs. Cummins are well & gay [...]
