From Mercury. Jan '3. 1797 /
a New Method of preserving roofs of Houses from
Injury by the Weather & the falling of Flakes of
Fire, communicated by Wm Patterson Esqr of
Horden, Kent to the Society of Arts & printed
in their 12t Vole
” Take 3 pts by Measure of Air Slacked Lime
2 of wood ashes, & 1 of fine sand, sift them thro” a
fine seive, & add as much Linseed Oil, as will
bring the mixture to the consistence of Paint,,
so as to be laid on with a Brush. great care
must be taken to mix the ingredients
perfectly. I believe grindg them as Paint in oil
would be an improvement. 2 Coats are necessary,
the 1st rather thin, the 2d as thick as can be
worked; it will improve in hardness by
time, it is impenetrable by moisture &
it is much cheaper than paint & more durable.
