Directions for using green rather than dried madder as dye. No. 265, p. 156.
Of Madder &c. (a plant)
Madder in drying loses ⅞ of its weight,
Just half the Quantity may be saved by useing it
green. To dye with the root Green, first chop
and then pound it in a Mortar, of wood or stone,
till it is reduced to a pulp, then throw it
into a boiler. Let it heat, middling hot, then
put your stuff in, then boil it ¾ of an hour
after which take out your Stuff as Usuall.
